“Phillip, wake up, we are getting married in less than three hours!” Melissa squeaked. Phillip was still half asleep when he produced one of his unique smiles. “I only have to take a shower and get dressed, so…” .
Melissa reacted swiftly. “Well, I have to have my nails and my hair done, I need to get dressed and do my make up. I need at least two hours for all these”. Phillip extended his arm in an attempt to convince Melissa to lie down.
“No, I will not lie down. It was my fault I let you in last night. You know that the groom is not supposed to spend the night with the bride!” she laughed.
“If I remember correctly, you did not complain much about my presence here last night” he said and got up.
Melissa blushed. “Thank God! Now get dressed and leave me alone!!” she said and Phillip smiled. “Yes, Mrs-soon-to-be-Mill”.
After a quick kiss Melissa found herself alone in her bedroom. Phillip had booked 4 rooms in a nearby hotel for his family. The wedding would take place in a small chapel in St Albans, where Melissa was baptized.
Melissa unzipped the cover bag of the wedding dress and stayed motionless in front of it. She would never get used to its elegance, its fine details and smooth fabric. She absolutely loved it. She found her bridesmaids downstairs. The whole inn was in gear. Mrs Phillipson was already in tears. “My dear child, it is your wedding day” she said. “I wish your parents could see you”. Jonathan was doing some last minute errands for the reception, which would of course take place in the inn. All the guests were invited to the wedding. Alisa was also here, being one of the bridesmaids, and helped Melissa with her dress.
After a beauty session that lasted more than two hours, Melissa looked herself in the mirror. The person she saw in there was a beautiful woman, ready to get married to the man of her dreams. She still could not believe the sheer luck that brought Phillips to her doorstep.
As she walked down the isle, she saw people she loved around her, ready to celebrate her union to Phillip.
And when he touched her hand, right before the altar, with a tear lingering in the corner of his eye, she knew….that they were meant to be eternally in love.

Oh, dear God, Melissa thought. It was well past midnight and she was in her bedroom. However, everybody else was not in theirs. All the new guests were downstairs, singing their heart out around the piano. Where did these people come from? Broadway? She sighed. She needed some rest after all this physical and psychological exhaustion but these people seemed to be going on forever. Melissa tried to remain calm. Maybe I should go downstairs and drink some warm milk, she thought. That would give them the message that some people want to sleep. Or maybe I can call the police, she thought and laughed at the idea of calling the police to control her own clients. She stayed motionless on her bed. How much has my life changed over the last few months, she pondered. My only wish has always been the success of this inn, she thought, and now that I have it in hand, I wish for some peace and quiet. She rolled her eyes. She should create her own Shelter if she wanted to relax among a sea of troubles and noise. She put her earplugs in and covered her head with her pillow. Within 2 or 3 minutes she was dreaming of a green field full of yellow flowers…and herself among these flowers, running free, laughing and singing a song about lovers. In the haze of her dream she saw Phillip stroking her hair and sealing her lips with a kiss. She savoured the kiss and somewhere inside her head wondered how could his stubble scratch her chin during her dream. Unable to move, Melissa opened her eyes to see Phillip…in front of her!
“Good evening, sleeping beauty” he said in husky voice.
“What are you doing here” she asked trying to tame her hair with her hands.
“I thought I stopped by for a cup of tea” he smiled. Her heart was racing.
“Did they allow you to travel?”
“No, they didn’t”.
“I told my doctors that you would take care of me” he smiled and Melissa’s hearts was shattered.
“I am not your nurse, Mr Mills” she said in a serious tone but Phillip was not affected.
“Oh, no, you are not” he smiled. “You are so much more than that”.
“What are you doing here so late? Who let you in?”
“You can blame my flight for my tardy arrival and Mrs Phillipson for my presence inside your room. She told me something about you being sad or something.”
“I am not sad. I was just worried about you” Melissa reacted.
“Why didn’t you call?”
“Why didn’t YOU call?”
“I have sent you an e-mail and you never replied. I thought you wanted to get away from my disability”.
“Get away from your...what? Oh, sometimes you are so stupid!”
“I know now” he said humbly.
He was sitting beside her and his face was so close to hers that the slightest move would throw them in each other’s arms.
“Are you staying?” Melissa asked faintly.
“I am, yes” he said in a dead serious tone, looking deeply in her eyes. Melissa thought he meant something else.
“I’ll go and have a room prepared for you and then we can talk tomorrow morning” she said and tried to get up but Phillips pinned her down.
“I am staying here. Here” he said pointing with his index finger her bed.
“So you are expecting to pick up where we left off?”
“I am not expecting anything. I am just hoping”.
“Phillip, have you been reading romantic literature?” she said smilingly and Phillips burst into laughter.
“Can I lie next to you?” he said. He seemed exhausted. Melissa could not say no. She simply could not. It was as if her fairy-godmother brought him here. She did not care how long it would last. All she wanted was to have him here, beside her, for anything between 2 hours and the eternity. The latter was preferable though, she smiled.
Phillips removed his clothes swiftly and lied under her duvet. He pulled her closed to him and Melissa snuggled in his warm arms. A piece of Heaven, she thought.
“About your friend…” he said suddenly but Melissa stopped him.
“I don’t care, I really don’t anymore”.
“We were on a business trip together and I found her naked in my room. I had to fire her. I did not want to tell you the truth, because you seemed so close, but I do not want this to stand between us anymore. You have to believe me” he said. He sounded so terrified at the thought that Melissa would not believe him. But she did believe him. Marianne’s poignant comments about Phillip were more than fishy.
“Will you forgive me?” he whispered in her ear.
“For letting you go” he said and Melissa took a deep breath.
“Only if you promise not to do it again”.
“Cross my heart”.
“I like that” Melissa smiled and Phillip gave her a soft kiss on the back of her shoulder. Then, they both fell in a deep, blissful sleep.
STAY TUNED FOR THE WEDDING
Melissa was lying on her stomach enjoying the masseuse’s therapeutic touch. She was very calm and serene. Marianne was lying next to her, equally enjoying the pampering of another masseuse.
Melissa had not heard from Phillip since Monday. She did not allow herself though to dwell on this and managed to appear cheerful to her friend, who had just arrived from Paris. Marianne accepted Melissa’s invitation to stay at the inn and now here they were, enjoying themselves a full day of spa.
“What are you planning for the following days?” Melissa asked her friend after a long silence.
“Well, I am staying here for tonight, then I am leaving for my parents’ house tomorrow at noon. On Sunday I am flying from Heathrow so I am thinking of spending my day in London before my departure”.
“I would come with you but I am not much of a fun of London lately” Melissa snorted.
“Didn’t I tell you to be careful?” Marianne retorted sharply. “Phillip is a manipulative bastard. He gets what he wants from you and then he discards you like a piece of rubbish”.
“It’s not like that” Melissa protested. “It is not his fault. He has had a terrible accident recently and I literally ran to him. I do not regret it though. I wanted to be there for him”.
“His loss, your gain” said Marianne smilingly. “He does not deserve you”.
“Anyways, I think that he owed me an update on his health progress. I did not expect him to disappear like that. I mean he sent me an e-mail and I did not reply but still…” Melissa moaned.
“Maybe he is used to treating women like that. Please tell me you didn’t….” Marianne laughed and Melissa found it very intrusive.
“Well, we were two grown ups, all alone in the most romantic setting ever. So…” . Much to her dismay she blushed.
“So, now, you do not have to worry at all about calling you. He won’t” Marianne said triumphantly and Melissa decided then and there to finish with this conversation. Marianne was very biased.
They spent the rest of the day, chatting, playing the piano, singing and watching romantic films on telly. Melissa was having a great time and tried to forget all about the Mills Debacle. After all, she did not regret anything. She gave herself to the love of her life and he turned out to be a heartless pig. Well, many women have been disillusioned by men in the past.
On Friday, a car came to pick Marianne up. Her parents lived a few miles away so Melissa promised to visit her again. When Marianna left, Melissa went to change into something more professional. She chose a dark blue dress and a pair of high heels because she was expecting a stream of new arrivals in the afternoon. With the launch of her new website, she advertised an offer for four nights at the price of three. So, at five o’clock in the afternoon, she opened the door to greet 25 new guests arriving from Paddington with a coach. They were 3 families of four, 3 couples and 7 elderly people on a trekking trip. They were all very nice and warm and all of a sudden the inn was full of commotion.
Melissa was grateful for this. She had finally a lot of things to do again and keep her mind of her major problem: Phillip’s rejection.

This novel’s competition is all about…shoes! More specifically, wedding shoes!
You can choose any colour you want (please, be reasonable!) and have the chance to win…well, a knitted scarf for the cold days of December!
The competition closes on the 30th of November!
Well, I guess this is the end, Melissa thought when the doors of the aircraft closed tightly behind her. Phillip had upgraded her seat and she was now sitting comfortably in business class. She hated it though. She hated that he was so coldly politely and kind. She was not interested in seat upgrades or fancy presents. All she wanted was his love. And obviously, that was out of reach. After the infamous line “would you care to resume the sessions with my consultants” she became distant. Phillip tried in vain to make her cheer up but she had her mind set on leaving as soon as possible from the ranch. After the air hostess had served her a nice cup of warm tea and some biscuits she closed her eyes and tried to relax. It was not possible thought. She must have repeated the line million times in her mind. What exactly did he say? Did he have the slightest idea about the impact he had in her life? How could he make such a silly suggestion? And most of all, how silly SHE was, thinking that he was going to propose to her? Just because they had sex? Sex does not mean anything to lots of men…Sweet words after sex simply adorn the intercourse and do not necessarily tell the truth. She was devastated. At last, at the comfort of privacy, she left her tears flow down her face. Thank God the business class was half empty so no one could hear her sob.
She arrived in London before the sunrise, so by the time she got home she saw the sun coming up. She smiled. A new beginning she thought. The Phillipless era. She could make it, she thought. It was ridiculous. She only knew him, for…what? Three months. She could live without him the way she had been living before him. A life devoid of passion and happiness? asked a small voice inside her head. Yes, a life without passion but also without so much pain, Melissa squashed her subconscious.
When she reached her inn, she went straight to her bed and fell asleep. It was a liberating sleep. When she woke up everything seemed so much better.
At 14.00 she went downstairs to greet Mrs Phillipson and Jonathan and give them their gifts from Texas.
“How is our sweet boy” asked Mrs Phillipson. Jonathan was in the barn.
“He is fine, much better now” said Melissa in a cold tone that made Mrs Phillipson get the message.
“I will make you some tea, dear” said the old lady as Melissa headed straight to her office to check her e-mails.
Four new reservations, many adverts and two new complimentary comments on tourismforall.com were her e-mails. Plus one from Marianne saying that she was coming on Thursday and one from Phillip. Melissa jolted when she saw his name on the screen. She clicked on the envelope, anxious to see what he had written.
Did you enjoy the flight? I am sorry you were so aloof on the day of your departure. I attribute it to fear of flying.
I will see you soon.
Mine?? Melissa cackled. Fear of flying? Very funny. No, damn it! I was cold because all you care about is business. She sighed as if her screen was Phillip.
I will focus on the good news thought. Marianne is coming for four days. I may tempt her to stay for a night at the inn and enjoy our facilities. In the meantime, I will not contact Mr No Feelings now matter what.
I am on my own now, she thought. I gave him the very best of me, everything I had. And all I got was a business proposal.

The days before her departure went by in a haze of steaming sex. Phillip and Melissa would spend most of their day in bed, making love and talking about their lives. Melissa was more than eager to learn how to please him and Phillip was equally keep on teaching. The result was a mixture of sleepless nights and multiple orgasms. An although Melissa was very happy she could at last enjoy some quality time with her love, she could not help thinking that they have talked pretty much about everything except for the way the things between them will develop in the future. Melissa had a bad feeling but she tried to suppress it. She knew she would have plenty of time in her life to miss his presence so she enjoyed every moment spent with him.
She was flying from Houston to London on Sunday afternoon and it was already Saturday morning. They were walking in the garden when they saw Phillip’s mother, wearing an old pair of jeans and wellies. “I am going to milk the cows! I am making my own cheese” she said happily. Melissa smiled to her warmly. She liked this woman. “Since Melissa is leaving tomorrow, I will cook something special tonight. Why don’t you come to the central house at around six and dine with us? Henry and Alina will join us too”. Phillip did not reply immediately, leaving room for Melissa to decide. She was excited at the prospect. “It is very nice of you, of course we will come”.
They kept walking around and Phillips showed her all his favourite spots when he was younger. They also talked about his plans to return to London after his full recovery. “I will probably go back to work in two weeks” he said in relief and Melissa smiled. Two weeks, that’s not bad. Still, nothing about his plans regarding their relationship.
“I have to visit the inn at some point” he smiled like a Cheshire cat.
“Of course you have” she said. “Although, you‘ve missed the Christmas decorations now that the holidays are over”.
“It’s okay, don’t worry. I only want to see you and Mrs Phillipson”.
“I see” she said trying to cover her disappointment. That will be the next step to their relationship? Friendly visits, tea and sympathy?
Phillips seemed unaware of her thoughts. He was cheerful and warm. He was holding her hand now and talking about some game he had invented with Henry when they were little.
“I am cold, maybe we should go in” she suggested and Phillip almost immediately changed direction. Is he ever going to say anything more than vague observations or am I a mere toy for him? These thoughts kept tormenting her as she was opening the door to her bedroom to start packing her suitcase yet again. Phillip had a session with his speech therapist. It was probably his last session since his speech now was clear and articulate.
The supper his mother had prepared was larger than life. She had prepared more than 5 different dishes and two different desserts: a chocolate fudge cake and a coconut pudding, because as she stated “she didn’t know if Melissa liked chocolate”. Melissa expressed her gratitude by eating way too much. The whole family thanked her warmly for her presence there and her contribution to Phillip’s recovery. Phillip was standoffish during the supper but Melissa attributed it to his feelings about her departure. When they returned home, Phillips sat in a rocking chair by the fireplace and invited her to join him. “Let’s drink a glass of wine next to the fire” he suggested and Melissa was all hopes and dreams. What an idyllic environment, what a romantic setting, what a perfect opportunity for him to pop the question. She went upstairs, slipped into something more comfortable then came down to find Phillip rearranging the logs in the firebox. “I’ll get the wine” she said and ran to the kitchen for a bottle of red wine and two crystal glasses. Maybe two candles? Oh no, that would be so cheesy.
“Melissa, I want us to talk about something really important” he said with a dead serious tone that sent shivers up and down her spine when she finally sat next to him. She smiled widely, offering him a sight of what her dentist had been proud of.
“I am all ears” she said.
“You know, Melissa, somehow I feel this discussion is long overdue. He suddenly stopped, reaching for his glass of wine. Melissa was trying hard to breath. She was speechless. She nodded to prompt him to continue. A powerful man, a billionaire, was lost for words. Melissa felt her self confidence bloom.
“Would you like to resume your sessions with my consultants? “

Phillip was doing great. He had successive sessions with his therapists and now he no longer needed the wheelchair but a pair of crutches for his broken leg. It was a miracle. The doctors said that he should thank God for his quick recovery. They also said that his strong will and determination were the best cure for his impediment. His scars were not to leave a permanent mark and Melissa was very happy about this. The problem with his behaviour, though, persisted. At some point during dinner she suggested that he should see a psychotherapist but he dismissed the idea rather abruptly. “I am not crazy” he yelled and went straight to his bedroom before finishing his food.
He didn’t even play the piano. He wandered around the house or the garden. He was not his usual cheerful self. He only talked with his family but other than that he would rarely address Melissa. At nights Melissa heard him walk in the house. It was obvious that he couldn’t sleep. Sometimes she went down on the pretext that she wanted something from the fridge only to find him watching TV in the middle of the night. Still, he wouldn’t talk to her.
Three days before her scheduled departure, and as they were having breakfast in the usual pregnant silence, she decided to bring up the painful matter.
“So, Phillip, I was thinking…” she started and Phillip interrupted her impatiently. “What?”
“I will have to leave at some point and I need to book my tickets” she said and he suddenly raised his eyes. Thank God, a reaction, she thought.
“I can’t blame you for not staying longer” he said.
“I’m having a great time, I just feel that I am more of a burden that a helping hand here so…”.
“Melissa, I wish I were a better company but I feel really bad being in mothballs like that”. He sighed. “I do not like being taken care of”.
“Neither do I “ she agreed but she bit her tongue. She hoped that he didn’t perceive that the comment as an innuendo.
“That, I know well” he said with a wry smile.
“I am really sorry for that night, I am still angry with your interference but I recognize it was for a good cause”.
“It does not matter now, it is too late”.
Too late? What does this mean? Were they talking about their relationship?
“Can you please look at me when we talk?” she said angrily. Phillip raised his head first and then his eyebrow.
“Melissa, you can use my laptop for your tickets“ he said and Melissa felt as if he had thrown iced water to her.
“I will, Phillip” she said and stood up. She ran straight to her bedroom and started packing her suitcase. She would leave as soon as she could. There was no point trying to make him understand. He was so consumed in his grief that he had become an insensitive bastard. She left the dining room and went upstairs. She was wearing her pajamas during breakfast, and she had just taken them off to wear her favourite trousers when Phillip burst into her room. Melissa was so shocked by his presence there that she froze. She did not even cover her body with her hands. It would be stupid anyways.
Phillips was standing at the door looking at her. He was teasing her with his eyes and Melissa felt her whole body react to his gaze.
“This is the second time I see you with you underwear” he smiled.
“Maybe because you don’t knock?” she said ironically and kept looking for a T-shirt. She was not ashamed of her body. He had seen it before. Thank God I am wearing black sexy lingerie, she thought.
“Are we actually going to have this conversation with you naked?” he said with a wicked smile on his face as he leant against the door frame.
“Nothing you haven’t seen before” she said.
“Last time you were injured” he answered and started approaching her.
“The tables have turned” Melissa replied dryly.
“Some functions have not been affected”.
“Judging from the look in your eyes I am about to taste your functions” Melissa replied with no shyness whatsoever.
“Damn right you are” he said and pulled her close to him. He was kissing her neck now and Melissa thought that she was in heaven. A small kiss on the lips was enough to turn the spark into a sizzling fire. They were kissing hard now. His tongue was carving passionate tracks in her mouth. Her whole body was reacting to his erotic invitation. Phillip was whispering tender words to her. “I want you so much it hurts” she heard him say. She smiled and started stroking him.
“Maybe we should lie down” she suggested and they sat on the bed. She was not afraid. She wanted to have sex with him. She was desperate to feel him love her just for a while.
“When they lay down, Phillip spread soft kisses on her neck and groped her breasts with his hands. “Perfect fit” he said when he saw how perfectly her cups fit in his palms. His touch on her hardened nipples was the icing on the cake. “Do you like that, baby?” Phillip asked her with a husky voice that added to the sensual atmosphere. She wanted to answer something clever but she couldn’t. Her throat was closed with clots of desire. Instead of an answer she placed the tip of her index on his chest and started dragging it downwards slowly until her palm reached the waistband of his underwear. He was wearing a pair of black boxers, but they were not enough to hide his erection.
She slipped her hand inside and encircled his masculinity. “Do YOU like this, baby?” she asked in the same tone. Now it was his turn to stay silent. Melissa could only hope she did it right.
It was time, she thought. He had removed her underwear and she was totally naked on her fluffy beddings. When he came over her, Melissa welcomed him with a petulance not befitting to a virgin. Phillip was surprised at first but soon he forgot it. After a few careful thrusts he started to accelerate and they reached the climax together. Their orgasm had the intensity of an earthquake and the glow of a summer morning in the Mediterranean.
They stayed there, holding each other, under the duvet. Her head was placed on his chest and she could hear his heart. Now what, she thought. What was that? A beautiful closure to the briefest relationship ever?
“I am sorry I was such a bitch” Melissa confessed.
“I am sorry for bringing your worst self out” he laughed.
They were touching each other, kissing and trying at the same time not to hurt his leg.
“I’ve wanted you since the moment I saw you” he told her in a fit of candidness.
“Well, it took me a few seconds more” Melissa smiled back.
Phillip put his arms behind his head, obviously relaxed. Melissa gave him a meaningful look.
“What?” he asked innocently.
“Shall we do it again?”
Τετάρτη, 21 Νοεμβρίου 2012
The days went by so quickly that Melissa was hardly able to believe she was boarding a private lear jet with Phillips’ company logo on the side. They would fly from Seattle to Texas, where Phillip would take some time to recover. She herself would stay with the family for a week or so and then book her ticket to London. Thank God her inn was doing okay. Her family was there to help and the reservations were ever increasing. The only problem now was Phillip’s behavior. Phillip was recovering okay but his attitude towards her was frigid. She did not expect him to be warm and tender with her of course, but a simple appreciation of her presence there would suffice. Phillip rarely talked to her and when he did he would give her orders like “get me some water” or “go back to your hotel, it’s late”. The flight was no more than four and a half hours so Melissa had bought some magazines for the flight. She was not worried at all, thought, because Alisa would fly with them as well and the two women got along very well.
The flight was nice and Melissa enjoyed the chat with Alisa. They talked about fashion, make up, politics and…men! Alisa told Melissa that she was planning to get pregnant and Phillip smiled. “I have to consent to that” he said and they all laughed. All but Phillip. He was looking outside his window, all exhausted and magnificent. He was pale, bruised and scarred and he was still the most beautiful creature she had ever seen.
“Melissa, I told the housekeeper to prepare a room for you at Phillip’s if you don’t mind. We are having the paramedical staff stay in our house so there is no vacant room for you”.
“What do you mean at Phillips’s?” Melissa asked in horror.
“I mean that the ranch has got three separate houses, the parents’, Henry and Alina’s and Phillip’s. Oh, poor child, you thought that we all lived together?” the old woman laughed.
Melissa was not laughing. It was obvious that she was in deep trouble. Living under the same roof with Phillip for a week. She thought she would stay with the whole family. It was annoying that they all believed they had an affair. Maybe Phillip thought she was trying to force herself to him.
“I am not sure about that” she said reluctantly. “Phillip and I are not that close” she said and everybody turned to look at her.
Then why on earth have you traveled all this way to here? She thought she heard them say.
“It is a big house” Phillip said without turning his head. How big? She thought. Big enough to fit all this tension?
At six o’clock in the afternoon two black limousines were entering the Mills’ property in Texas. The central house was obviously the parents’ and the two smaller ones were the sons’. “Smaller”, she giggled. Each of the “smaller” houses was double her inn. They were separated by a cobblestone road which led to the main entrance.
“The house is equipped with all the facilities needed for Phillip’s condition. We have two nurses, a physiotherapist and a speech therapist stay with us for as long as it takes so, Melissa, you will have nothing to worry about” said Mrs Mills.
A large group of staff came out to welcome the family and especially Phillip. He seemed happy to see them.
Melissa was led to her room, a spacious and luminous room on the second floor, overseeing the ranch. The room had a huge iron bed and a small fireplace. It was very beautiful. Now wonder Phillip came here to relax and hide form the world.
“We’ll stay here all alone?” she asked him when they were left alone. He was sitting in a wheelchair temporarily.
“You don’t have to worry about your chastity. As you can see I am cripple” he said bitterly and turned to leave. Melissa stood there watching him turn the wheels to his wheelchairs. He was deeply affected by his state. A wounded hawk. That’s what he was.
Τρίτη, 20 Νοεμβρίου 2012
Melissa managed to get some sleep in her modest room in a nearby hotel. She didn’t care much about the quality of the accommodation. She only wanted it to be near the hospital. In the morning she chose a clean dress and a long coat and headed straight to the hospital. She had no plans whatsoever, just to spend as much time as she could with Phillip. His mother was in his room and she was reading a magazine while a nurse was doing some stretching exercises with Phillip to avoid muscle atrophy.
“Good morning, Melissa” said the elegant lady when she saw her. “Alina went to buy some music CDs for Phillip and his brother is running his business through Skype connection. Come, take a seat and sit next to him” she prompted Melissa.
Melissa took his hand in hers and started stroking the tips of his fingers. Phillip was still comatose.
“So, my hotel is run by a young lady. She is very competent” she told him and his mother smiled. “I will leave you alone. You two seem to have a lot to talk about”. Melissa could not thank her enough.
“Mrs Phillipson says that she is trying a new cherry pie recipe and she will give it to you when you get better. Marc is not my boyfriend, he is my cousin. We had a guest last week and when he left we realized that he was a famous painter. Ah! My car has broken down for good and now I need to buy a new one. Or rather a new used one” Melissa laughed. She was miserable. She was laughing but all she wanted to do is burst into tears. Phillip was so hopeless, lying here on a small bed barely fitting him. He was no longer a powerful tycoon but a human being in desperate need of God’s intervention. She was now combing his hair with her hair. “The new spa wing is very popular. Thank you very much for the loan. I never had the chance to tell you how much I appreciate the offer. I still doubt your intentions” she smiled “but the action is more than welcome”. His mother came in. “The doctor needs to examine him. Will you come out for a moment child?”.
Melissa followed her outside reluctantly. She wanted to stay with Phillip. The handsome doctor went inside and stayed for more than 20 minutes. Her heart was racing.
When he came out of the room, Phillip’s mother asked him anxiously about her son’s progress. “He is doing great. Generally these cases require either time or a miracle. We have to provide one of them” he smiled. “Talk to him, play his favourite music, touch him and above all, pray to God that he will wake up. I myself am fairly optimistic based on what I saw in there” he said and left. Phillip’s mother left a tear run down her cheek. “I am sorry for this, child, but I am so afraid” she said. Melissa extended her hair and touched the woman’s hand. “I am sure he will be okay. It’s Phillip we are talking about. In less than one month he will be working” she said and hoped she could believe it. “I have to arrange his air transfer to our ranch, dear” said Mrs Mills. “Excuse me for a while”.
Melissa went inside Phillips room and sat next to him, “They are planning to take you to the ranch and then…what? I didn’t expect this. Will I have to go back now? I am sure I can find a place to stay in Texas, but how will your parents take it if I visit your house every day?” She frowned. Phillip was motionless. She looked outside the window and saw a small rainbow far in the skyline. It was raining earlier and now it was sunny. She smiled. Maybe God was giving her a message.
“So, when you wake up and get better, you can come and visit my inn. I painted the gazebo beige and it’s now clean and bright. And we can go riding with the horses. I miss riding. I miss you too. Can you please wake up?” she was crying now. “I don’t care about us, I want you to wake up even if I have to see you with another skinny top model on the cover of gossip magazines every week”.
She had her head lowered when she felt a minor squeeze. Phillip was moving his hand. “Nurse” she screamed at the top of her lungs. Instantly two nurses and a doctor burst into the room. The doctor took a pen like torch from his pocket ad examined his eye. “We have eye movement” he said and Melissa ran outside to call Phillip’s family. “Phillip, can you hear me?” the doctor asked him and Phillip nodded. “Do you know where you are?”. Phillip nodded again. “We have cognitive activity” the doctor smiled. “Phillip, you have had an accident and we are taking care of you. Would you mind trying to say something? Do not get discouraged if you fail. You will be able to talk after a few sessions with our logotherapists.
Phillip looked around, a bit disorientated and said the most beautiful three words Melissa had ever heard. “I am thirsty”. Melissa put a piece of cotton inside a water bottle and brought it on his lips. Phillip closed his eyes and savored the cool water. His mother was hugging everyone. Melissa, the doctor, Henry, her husband. Alina was still in town, so they called her to tell her to skip shopping and hurry back.
“You will have to stay in for a few days now that he has woken up” said the doctor. “I will allow you to take him home first thing on Monday”.
“Whatever you say, doc” said Henry obviously in a good mood. “We have set up a small hospital wing in his house in Texas, so don’t you worry about anything”.
“I am so happy for Phillip” he said and went to call another doctor for a physical examination.
“What happened?” Phillip asked confused.
“You ran into a tree with your Lotus” his mother said.
“I never liked that car anyway” he replied and everybody laughed.
“Well, some of us would really like a new car, sir” said Melissa and Phillip turned to look at her. He smiled weakly.
“My doctor’s accent is American, so I am in the USA?” he asked and his mother nodded.
“Then what is Melissa doing here?”
“I was in the neighborhood” Melissa said shyly and looked at him. He was no longer smiling. He had a serious look on his face which was more meaningful than a thousand words.
“I trust you will leave us now that I am okay” he asked bluntly and Melissa froze.
“Phillip Elmer Mills, how dare you talk to this fine lady like that? You only woke up thanks to her and we will be eternally indebted to her for this. Apologize instantly” his mother said.
“I am sorry” he said looking away. It was obvious he did not mean it. Melissa felt really bad. Everybody was looking at her, feeling sorry for her.
“We are staying for two days here and we are leaving on Monday. And Melissa will fly with us” said Mrs Mills. Melissa reacted to this statement. “I do not take no for an answer, Melissa. You will fly with our lear jet to our ranch, stay for a few days there and then we will arrange your flight to London. Is this okay with you?”.
Melissa wanted to make sure that Phillip agreed with this so she avoided giving a straightforward answer. “We’ll see” she said.
“It is the least we can do” Henry broke in. “Our ranch is very beautiful this time of the year” he added.
“I am sure it is, but I have a business back home and I need to…”
“Oh, yes, the business! Always the business” Phillip said.
“What’s your problem? You said you didn’t want me to be here and now you object to my departure? You are even more obnoxious than before, if possible!” she and his family giggled.
“Oh, you are so coming home with us” said Henry.
